Zuri Shanga Jewelry

This beautiful beaded jewelry collection is made in Southern Africa. Beadwork has played a great role in the culture among the tribal groups throughout the African continent. Each tribe has ascribed a unique meaning associated with the colors and style of the beadwork. Certain pieces represent social status while others indicate one's marital status. Some colors express celebration, mourning or victory. Just as there are vast differences in languages among the groups, the colors and the combination thereof, translate differently from tribe to tribe.
The best quality of modern Zulu beadwork is made almost exclusively from glass beads also known as seed beads. Zulu beads are unique because of the code by which particular colors are selected and combined in various ways to communicate to members of the community. These messages were often coded in geometrical designs and shapes. The colors and shapes have specific meanings assigned to them. Consequently, individuals could create a "love letter" (incwadi) made entirely of beads.  Zulu beads can be used to express a series of emotions. The beadwork is usually designed and handcrafted exclusively by women, but is worn by both sexes. Beadwork worn by men is received from wives and female admirers.
