TO REUPHOLSTER OR NOT TO REUPHOLSTER, THAT IS THE QUESTION.

Spring is time to start getting your home ready - decluttering and airing out furniture. Then there's that couch, ottoman or arm chair you don't know if you should keep it or not. There's that one grandma gave you that has been in the family for generations. To determine if you should upholster or toss:

BEFORE

Begin by inspecting its condition:
-look at it from all directions,
-has it retained its shape?
-what is the condition of the frame, springs and padding?
-check for the webbing strips (found under the piece, usually in black and would require tearing it to view webbing).

Choosing upholstery fabric:
-what is the decor style of the existing piece or the one you want to create?
This is important in that what would work on a contemporary style home will not work on an English traditional style home.
-choose within the color range of the existing furniture and color schemes.
-locate a fabric store with knowledgeable staff.  Bring a picture of the piece you are working on.
-view the available fabric books  if you can spare the time. This is where seeking the assistance of an experienced interior designer will come in handy. As they work with fabrics regularly, they know different ranges, quality, durability and designers of most fabrics.  With such a vast number of fabrics in the market, the designer can help you narrow down your choices.
-most importantly, be sure to be upfront about the budget for the project.  There is no point in looking at fabrics that are out of your price range.  It also helps the designer steer  you towards the best fabric within your price range.
